किसान हमारे खाने के लिए गेहू, बाजार, मक्का, डाल, सब्जियां, फल और कई प्रकार के खाने की चीजे उगाते है।
देश की अर्थव्यवस्था में किसान का सबसे बड़ा योगदान है क्योंकि अगर अन्न ही नहीं होगा तो हम खायेगे और बिना अन्न के हम रहेगे नहीं तो अर्थव्यवस्था तो दूर हम जीवित ही नहीं रहेगे।
किसान द्वारा मेहनत से की गयी खेती वर्षा पर निर्भर करती है उसे इसमें नुकसान होगा या फायदा इसके परिणाम की चिंता किये बिना वो अपना कर्म करते हुए खेती करता है।
पुराने समय में किसान बैल और हल के जरिये खेती करता था मगर आजकल किसान खेती के लिए ट्रैक्टर और आधुनिक औजारो का इस्तेमाल करता है जिसमे मेहनत कम और कार्य जल्दी सम्पन्न हो जाता है।
किसान के महत्त्व को ध्यान में रखते हुए सरकार भी इनका विशेष ख्याल रखती है इनके लिए कई योजनाये लाती है जिनमे खेती के लिए इनको सस्ती ब्याज दर पर लोन और सस्ते दामों पर औजारो और खाद और बीज उपलब्ध करवाती है।
किसान का महत्व बताते हुए भारत के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री लाल बहादुर शास्त्री ने “जय जवान जय किसान” नारा दिया था।
